A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Quotes from Act 1 Scene 1

Quote 1:

To you your father should be as a god  (L47)

This quote shows the relationship, power between father and daughters or just male and female. The quote shows that the daughter’s role is to follow the father’s order and this also tell us that man has more power and women has no freedom.

Quote 2:

So is Lysander  (L52)

This quote is said by Hermia when arguing that Lysander is as good as Demetrius. This quote display the personality of Hermia. Hermia is shown to be stubborn and independent. She believes in her own opinion and isn’t afraid to show it because in this quote, Hermia was shouting back a Theseus who is a man who has many power.

Quote 3:

O, teach me how you look, and with what art you sway the motion of Demetrius’ heart.  (L192 – 193)

This quote shows Helena’s love for Demetrius. Helena is show as someone who isn’t as confident as Hermia and fills self pity. This also show that Helena is really desperate for Demetrius’ love because of how she pleads for Hermia’s help.

Quote 4:

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged cupid painted blind  (L234 – 235)

This is a quote that explains a commonly used phrase, love is blind. Love I is blind and Helena knows that she is blinded by her love by Demetrius.

Quote 5:

If I have thanks it is a dear expense; but herein mean I to enrich my pain, to have his sight thither and back again.   (L248 – 250)

This quote shows how much Helena loves Demetrius. This is because the “dear expense” in the quote means that even though she might break her friendship with Hermia but if she can spend more time with Demetrius and make him notice her more, she would do it.
